Charlene Pryor is a native of Kansas City, MO. When she saw her first horse at age 1, it was love at first sight. “Baldy”was a big old retired cow pony from a small farm down the street. He had wandered up the street to eat grass in the front yard. Her mom glanced out the window and there was little Charlene, barely old enough to walk, hugging the leg of that old horse. Thus began a love affair that would last a lifetime. She read every horse book she could find , hanging on every word and illustration. Her early heroes of equestrian art were Wesley Dennis, Sam Savitt, Lucy Kemp-Welch and Rosa Bonheur. Being a city girl, she couldn’t have a real horse but she had a stable full of imaginary ones that she galloped around the neighborhood. She even pretended to be a horse at times and could whinny better that anyone in the third grade! And of course, she drew and painted them all the time too.
Charlene began serious studies in the art painting of her equine friends about 25 years ago. She has been very fortunate to study with internationally know artists, Robert Von, Philomene Bennett, and Lou Marak. And also with one of her early heroes, Sam Savitt.
A speech and theater major at UMKC, she has worked in the Kansas City news broadcasting industry for 40 years. She is presently a video editor for KCTV5 News. When she’s not working, she likes to spend some of her time with horses. Whether riding, photographing, or painting them, she has never outgrown her passion for horses. After working to tell stories with moving pictures all day, she finds it a welcome challenge to capture a story in one frame on canvas.
Charlene is married with two grown daughters, a few grandchildren and a couple of cats. And yes, she finally got her very own horse. Ned the Wonderhorse was her dear companion on many trail rides and an inspiration for her artwork.
Charlene has shown her work at the Santa Fe Connection and Wild Pony Galleries in Overland Park, Kansas, Artichokes Gallery in Leawood, Kansas, Wyoming Home in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Hard Bean Cafe, Grandview, Missouri, The American Royal Western Art Show, Images Gallery, Grand Street Cafe, Bohemian Gallery, Apex Art Space, Bennett-Marak Studio, Von Art Studio, and the Kansas City Artists Coalition/Open Studios in Kansas City, Missouri.
